Electrical Infrared - Do I need to remove panels?

American Society for Testing Material (ASTM) Standard guide for Examining Electrical and Mechanical Equipment with Infrared Thermography, Section 6.4.2. “Opening or Removing, or both, all necessary cabinet and enclosures covers immediately before examination to provide the infrared thermographer with direct views of the equipment.” Example above – a 2-pole breaker, carrying a load of 7 amps which is seen as the soft warm glow just left of the switch. However, a difference in temp, 93 degrees F on the top line side screw and 201 degrees F on the bottom is a classic thermal signature of a loose electrical connection and only visible in the image with the dead front removed.
